Hermeneutic Phenomenological Understanding on Lived Experience of On-site Supervisors in Art Therapy Practica

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to understand the experience of on-site supervisors in art therapy practica by exploring the essence and the meaning of their experience. Data were collected through in-depth interview with seven on-site supervisors in art therapy practica. The collected data was analyzed with the method of Max van Manen. Six essential themes and eighteen sub-themes were produced. The essential themes were: ¡®Decide to be an on-site supervisor with a sense of mission', ¡®Establish an on-site supervision system through the coordination with the institution', ¡®Provide practical feedback to the trainees at the site', ¡®Grow through trial and error as on-site supervisors', ¡®Reward of on-site supervisors', and ¡®Need for continuing education to maintain professionalism of on-site supervisors'. The conclusions of this study are as follows. The participants constructed an on-site supervision system for trainees, and provided a safe fence and vivid training for them. Although the participants' professional competency was reinforced as on-site supervisors, they felt that they needed constant education to maintain their professionalism. The study findings present the practical suggestions for constructing on-site supervision systems and fostering on-site supervisors in art therapy practica by sharing the experiential data of the participants in the study.
